After years of silence following its 2022 reveal, Kingdom Hearts 4 finally has a release window: late 2027 on PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. The news dropped during the D23 2026 Disney Entertainment Showcase, where Square Enix also unveiled Pixar’s Coco as the first confirmed Disney world in the game.

Into the Land of the Dead

A new trailer shown at D23 puts Sora in a vivid recreation of the Land of the Dead from Pixar’s Coco, complete with themed face paint and a matching Keyblade. As GamesRadar reports, the trailer also delivers the first proper in-game look at King Mickey, while Donald Duck and Goofy remain in Hades’ orbit as they search for Sora. Sora himself appears stranded in Quadratum, the modern-day city introduced in the game’s earlier reveal, which the Coco world seems to mirror thematically as its own version of an afterlife. Eurogamer notes the world is the first new setting confirmed for the title.

The trailer also previews combat mechanics. According to the game’s Steam listing, players can swap Keyblades mid-fight to access unique attacks, chain magic with physical combos, and use a new unspecified battle feature to build extended combo strings.

A Big Year for Square Enix

If Kingdom Hearts 4 ships on schedule, 2027 becomes a landmark year for Square Enix. GamesRadar points out the publisher also has Final Fantasy 7 Revelation and Final Fantasy 14 Evercold targeting the same year. Kingdom Hearts 4 would arrive eight years after Kingdom Hearts 3 and five years after its own announcement. Storefront pages are now live on all confirmed platforms for anyone who wants to wishlist the game ahead of launch. PC Gamer has also reported that Disney now considers Kingdom Hearts a billion-dollar franchise, which adds commercial weight to the renewed push behind the series.

Anime Series Headed to Disney+ and Disney Channel

The D23 showcase did not stop at the game. As Eurogamer reports, a Kingdom Hearts anime series is in development for both Disney+ and Disney Channel. GamesRadar adds that the show will tell an original story rather than adapt existing game events. Director Tetsuya Nomura encouraged fans to let their imaginations run with what that could mean. Video Games Chronicle covered the full scope of the D23 blowout, calling it one of the more substantial Kingdom Hearts reveals in recent memory. Eurogamer separately confirmed the 2027 release window alongside additional context on what was shown at the event.
