Killzone Is Reportedly Coming Back as a Remake, With People Can Fly Likely at the Helm

Killzone has been silent since Shadow Fall launched alongside the PS4 in November 2013. That silence may be ending. According to a MP1st report published September 6, Guerrilla Games is working with an external studio on a new Killzone project, most consistently described by sources as a remake or remaster of an older entry. The outside partner is strongly indicated to be People Can Fly, the Polish studio behind Bulletstorm and Outriders.

One thing to say upfront: none of this is official. Sony and Guerrilla have not commented, and MP1st itself states it does not expect a public announcement anytime soon. What follows is a breakdown of what the report claims, how confident the sourcing is on each point, and why the timing makes more sense than it first appears.

What the Report Actually Says

MP1st was careful to separate what its sources stated with confidence from what they’d heard less consistently. Here’s how the claims stack up:

  • Stated firmly: A new Killzone project is in the very early stages of production, and Guerrilla is involved in a collaborative role alongside a studio that is not a PlayStation first-party team.
  • Most consistent version: The project is a visual overhaul of an existing game, meaning a remake or remaster rather than a new numbered entry. The most logical candidate, per the report, is the original 2004 PlayStation 2 Killzone.
  • Strongly indicated but unconfirmed: People Can Fly is leading development, tied to its existing co-development deal with Sony.
  • Heard, but less consistently: A full reboot of the franchise has also come up in conversations, though the remake/remaster framing appeared far more often.

Multiple outlets, including Push Square, TheGamer, and Game Rant, have since written up the story, but all of them trace back to the same MP1st sourcing. No independent confirmation has surfaced yet.

The People Can Fly Connection: Project Delta

The People Can Fly link isn’t a random guess. In March 2025, the studio signed a co-development agreement with Sony Interactive Entertainment for a game codenamed Project Delta, officially described as a prototype for a new title built on intellectual property owned by the publisher. No IP was named at the time, and speculation immediately split between two long-dormant PlayStation shooters: Killzone and SOCOM.

MP1st now believes Project Delta and the Killzone project are one and the same. If accurate, that would mean development has technically been underway since spring 2025, which lines up with the “very early” framing. It would also put Killzone on an already crowded plate for People Can Fly, which is juggling Project Florence with 2K and other work tied to Krafton and Microsoft licenses.

Worth noting: Gameranx points out that the partner could just as easily be a remake specialist like Virtuos, the studio behind Oblivion Remastered. The People Can Fly theory is the strongest available, but it remains a theory.

Why Now? It Comes Down to Horizon

The more interesting part of the report is the scheduling. According to MP1st’s sources, Killzone was originally meant to become Guerrilla’s next major focus after wrapping Horizon Hunters Gathering, the multiplayer Horizon spin-off. That plan changed when Hunters Gathering reportedly went through negative playtests and was rebooted, with its live-service structure being stripped out in favor of a more traditional multiplayer format. Fixing that game is now Guerrilla’s top priority, and most of the studio is assigned to it.

Meanwhile, the next mainline single-player Horizon game is said to have only a small team on it and is reportedly years away. The knock-on effect: the Killzone project is now expected to arrive before Horizon 3, despite being in such an early state. MP1st is careful to add that this could shift again given how far off everything is.

Put together, the picture is of a studio whose main franchise has hit turbulence, and whose older, cheaper-to-revive IP has become a more attractive near-term option than it was two years ago.

A Reversal, or Just a Pragmatic Move?

There’s a slightly awkward wrinkle here. In 2024, Guerrilla publicly said it was done with Killzone, framing the studio’s future entirely around Horizon. A remake handled mostly by an external team isn’t a full reversal of that stance, since Guerrilla’s own developers would still be on Horizon. But it’s hard to read the report as anything other than Sony testing whether there’s still an audience for the Helghast.

There have been hints of that testing already. In 2024, Helldivers 2 ran a Killzone crossover that brought Helghast armor and weapons into Arrowhead’s shooter, complete with a lore nod suggesting both games share a universe. It sold well and reminded a lot of people that the franchise still has pull.

A Quick Refresher on the Franchise

For readers who missed it the first time around: Killzone launched on PS2 in 2004 as Sony’s answer to Halo, famously (and unfairly) marketed as a “Halo killer.” It follows a war between the ISA and the Helghast, a militaristic faction descended from human colonists who were exiled to a hostile planet and mutated to survive it. The series spans six games across PS2, PSP, PS3, Vita, and PS4:

  • Killzone (PS2, 2004) — the original, sold around 2 million copies
  • Killzone: Liberation (PSP, 2006) — a top-down spin-off
  • Killzone 2 (PS3, 2009) — widely regarded as the series peak and a PS3 technical showcase
  • Killzone 3 (PS3, 2011)
  • Killzone: Mercenary (PS Vita, 2013) — developed by Guerrilla Cambridge
  • Killzone Shadow Fall (PS4, 2013) — a launch title with mixed reviews and modest sales; its multiplayer servers shut down in August 2022

If the report is right that the 2004 original is the target, a modern remake would be reintroducing a game most of today’s PS5 owners have never touched, which is a very different proposition from remastering Killzone 2 for people who remember it fondly. It’s also the same logic Microsoft is reportedly applying to the original Halo, and the same one Bethesda used for Oblivion Remastered earlier this year.
