James Turner Rejoins Pokémon as Creative Director of Art and Design

James Turner, the first Westerner to ever officially design a Pokémon, is heading back to the franchise. Turner has announced he is joining The Pokémon Company International as Creative Director of Pokémon Art and Design, ending a four-year absence from the series he helped shape during his years at Game Freak.

A Notable Departure and a Successful Detour

Turner left Game Freak in 2022 to co-found All Possible Futures alongside Jonathan Biddle. The studio’s debut project, The Plucky Squire, launched in 2024 and landed to a positive critical reception, earning Metacritic scores between 72 and 83 depending on the platform and an 85% recommendation rate on OpenCritic, according to VGC. With that chapter closed, Turner has now set his sights back on the world of Pokémon.

Back in the World of Pokémon

Turner made the announcement himself on X, stating: “Big news! I’ve started a new role as Creative Director of Pokémon Art and Design at The Pokémon Company International. It feels great to be working in the world of Pokémon again, with a lovely group of people. I’m very excited about what comes next!” As IGN notes, the specifics of the role remain unclear, though it is almost certainly distinct from his previous hands-on design work at Game Freak.

During his original tenure, Turner built a substantial design credit list within the franchise. He finalized the design of Shadow Lugia and created a range of Pokémon including Vanillite, Golett, Vullaby, and Phantump, among others. His work also extended to the trading card game, where he produced art for cards such as Pansear from the Next Destinies set and the Duskull, Dusclops, and Dusknoir art rares from Shrouded Fable.

A Connection That Never Fully Broke

Turner’s relationship with the Pokémon brand did not go completely dark during his time away from full-time work on the series. VGC reports that he contributed artwork in recent years that appeared on merchandise sold through The Pokémon Center, keeping at least a partial creative thread alive between him and the franchise. His return to an official capacity at The Pokémon Company International now makes that relationship formal once again, and brings one of the series’ most historically significant contributors back into its creative fold at a senior level.
