Double Fine’s atmospheric adventure Keeper has made its way to PlayStation 5, expanding beyond its original Xbox and PC release following the studio’s return to independence. The PS5 launch was announced during a State of Play broadcast, according to Video Games Chronicle.

What Is Keeper?

Keeper is a third-person adventure game set in a post-human world, one that tells its story without any dialogue or written words. The central character is a Lighthouse that awakens after lying dormant for ages, cracks apart, and then reassembles itself on newly formed legs. It then sets off toward a mountain at the center of an island, driven by an unnamed sense of purpose. Double Fine describes it as an “atmospheric” experience built around exploration and environmental storytelling.

Double Fine’s Road Back to Independence

The PS5 release arrives at a notable moment for the studio. Double Fine, along with South of Midnight developer Compulsion Games, was permitted by Microsoft to leave and operate as an independent studio again. Both studios retained ownership of their intellectual properties and game catalogs, and each received investment funding to support the transition, as VGC reported.

Double Fine founder Tim Schafer addressed the publishing situation in a recent interview with Kinda Funny Games, confirming that all of the studio’s back catalog rights have returned to the team. “The IP came back to us, and we’ve got the publishing rights back for our games,” Schafer said, noting that some titles still display Microsoft branding due to processing delays. He also made clear that purchases of any Double Fine game directly support the studio’s ongoing operations and help extend its runway as an independent developer.
