Double Fine Productions CEO Tim Schafer has confirmed that the studio owns, or will soon own, the intellectual property and publishing rights to every game it released during its seven years under Microsoft’s Xbox label, meaning every purchase of a Double Fine title now puts money directly back into the independent studio’s hands.

Schafer Sets the Record Straight

Schafer addressed the matter on the Kinda Funny Games podcast after a fan asked whether buying Double Fine’s back catalog, which includes titles such as Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln, actually benefits the studio financially. According to Eurogamer, Schafer stated plainly: “The transfer of the IP came back to us, and we get the publishing rights back to all our games.” He did note that a handful of titles remain with Xbox for now, describing the delay as standard administrative processing rather than a dispute.

As PC Gamer reports, Schafer was direct about the financial stakes for the studio going forward: “If you’re curious, buying any of our games helps support the studio. We can turn that money into revenue that helps us extend that runway.”

Context: The Xbox Restructuring

Double Fine’s independence follows the broad reorganization announced by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma in July, which affected roughly 3,200 roles across Microsoft’s gaming division. Several studios were spun back out as independent entities while retaining their intellectual property and game libraries. Double Fine itself laid off approximately a quarter of its 90-person workforce during the transition, with the studio saying at the time that the cuts were necessary to reach a headcount it could financially sustain. Double Fine is not alone in this situation: Compulsion Games, the studio behind We Happy Few and South of Midnight, was cut loose in the same restructuring and has similarly confirmed it holds onto its own IP.

What Comes Next: Amnesia Fortnight Returns

With its catalog secured, Double Fine is wasting little time charting a course for new work. As GamesRadar notes, Schafer revealed the studio plans to revive its Amnesia Fortnight game jam as a Kickstarter campaign, inviting backers to vote on which prototype gets developed into the studio’s next full project. The jam is scheduled to run from August 31 through most of September. The move signals a return to the crowd-funded, community-driven approach that defined Double Fine’s earlier independent years before its acquisition by Xbox in 2019.

For fans of the studio, the practical takeaway from Schafer’s comments is straightforward: purchasing Double Fine’s games through any available storefront now flows revenue directly to the team building whatever comes next.
