Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 will ship with more single-player content than any previous game in the series, and possibly more than any RTS has offered at launch. That is the claim from King Art Games creative director Jan Theysen in a new interview with IGN, backed by hard numbers: four full campaigns, one per launch faction, and over 70 campaign missions in total.

Four campaigns, one per faction

Each of the four launch factions gets its own campaign: Space Marines, Orks, Necrons and Adeptus Mechanicus. Theysen says every one of them is larger than the entire campaign of the original 2004 Dawn of War, both in mission count and in expected play time. He hedged the bigger claim, noting that someone will always dig up a bigger RTS from the mid-90s, but stood by it: in his view the game probably has more single-player content than any other RTS at launch. gamebastion

The campaigns branch. Each one has a storyline with alternate paths that feed into an overarching plot, so a single playthrough will not touch every mission. Theysen used the Ork campaign as an example: around 18 missions exist if you play everything, while any one run goes through 14 or 15 of them.

How it compares to earlier Dawn of War games

GameYearCampaign missions
Dawn of War200411
Dawn of War II200920 to 30 per playthrough (non-linear, repeatable missions)
Dawn of War III201717
Dawn of War 4202670+ across four campaigns

Dawn of War 4 is built as a direct successor to the first game, with base building and the series’ sync-kill animations back after Dawn of War III’s divisive 2017 reboot. The single-player focus is deliberate: King Art, the studio behind Iron Harvest, said last year that player surveys from that game pointed overwhelmingly toward campaigns rather than multiplayer. A full online suite is still part of the launch package.

Tutorials built into the campaigns

The game opens with two tutorial missions played as the Astra Militarum, the Imperial Guard under its current name, covering only the basics. Each faction campaign then teaches its own mechanics as it goes. The first Ork mission introduces the Ork economy, build system, upgrades and stratagems. The Adeptus Mechanicus campaign includes a mission built around unlocking and learning the Imperial Knight. Theysen says the team avoided front-loading systems so campaigns keep introducing new elements across their length.

Release date and post-launch plans

Dawn of War 4 launches on December 3, 2026 on PC via Steam, published by Deep Silver. The date was pushed back in August from the original September 17 to allow more time for performance work and bug fixing. The Commander Edition, which bundles all Year One content, grants early access from November 30.

The campaign content keeps growing after launch. According to the roadmap IGN describes:

  • Early 2027: Crusade Mode and Map Pack 1 (free)
  • Early spring: Map Pack 2 and the Lord Ahmnok Last Stand Crusade (free)
  • Spring: Blood Ravens story prologue (paid)
  • Later: Map Pack 3 and a mission editor (free)
  • Early summer: Map Pack 4 and the Guzcutta Last Stand Crusade (free)
  • Summer: Aftermath campaign expansion with a new faction (paid)

King Art has said exact dates for post-launch content will be confirmed closer to each release.
