Warlords II
PC
SNEG, Strategic Studies Group
Warlords II is a foundational masterpiece of turn-based strategy, expanding on the concepts of its predecessor to create one of the most addictive “world conquest” loops in gaming history. Developed by Strategic Studies Group (SSG), it moved away from the fixed map of the original to introduce a more dynamic, varied theater of war. It is celebrated for its elegant simplicity, deep tactical nuances, and the introduction of a sophisticated map editor that allowed the community to create thousands of custom scenarios, ensuring the game’s longevity for decades.
The Quest for Illuria and Beyond
At its core, Warlords II is a game of total territorial domination. Up to eight players (human or AI) compete to conquer the land of Illuria—or any of the numerous expansion maps like the Sahara or Middle Earth. Players begin with a single city and a lone hero, tasked with exploring the fog of war, capturing neutral or enemy settlements, and generating the gold necessary to fund a global military campaign. The strategy lies in the “stacking” mechanic, where up to eight units can be combined into a single army, balanced for movement speed, raw power, and specialized abilities.
Heroes and Quests
Building on the RPG elements that would later define the series, Hero units are the centerpiece of your military strategy. Heroes are the only units capable of exploring ruins, where they can find powerful magical artifacts or recruit legendary allies like Dragons and Archons. They can also undertake specific quests—such as slaying a monster or traveling to a distant city—to earn massive gold rewards or experience points. A high-level hero equipped with a legendary sword and a flying mount can transform a standard stack of infantry into an elite strike force capable of toppling the most fortified capitals.
Tactical Depth and the Editor
Despite its age, Warlords II features a surprising amount of tactical depth. Success requires managing city production cycles, ensuring that your frontline cities are constantly churning out reinforcements while your rear-guard settlements focus on long-term economic growth. The introduction of Warlords II Deluxe in 1995 further refined the experience, adding high-resolution graphics, additional unit types, and a powerful Map and Scenario Editor. This editor allowed players to change everything from terrain types to unit stats, effectively turning the game into a platform for any fantasy or historical conflict imaginable.
