Original War (2001) is a cult-classic real-time strategy (RTS) game that stands as one of the most unique hybrids of the genre, blending tactical warfare with deep role-playing elements and a “hard sci-fi” time-travel narrative. Developed by the Czech studio Altar Interactive, it rejects the “expendable unit” trope of traditional RTS games, instead forcing players to manage a small, finite group of individual characters whose survival is paramount to the campaign’s success.

The Premise: The Siberite War

The story centers on a desperate mission to secure a mineral called Siberite (or Alaskite, depending on who wins), an extraterrestrial substance capable of catalyzing cold fusion and providing infinite energy.

  • The Mission: Discovery of the EON (an alien time machine) allows the United States to send a small force two million years into the past. Their goal is to mine Siberite in Siberia and transport it across the Bering Land Bridge to Alaska, ensuring it falls under American control in the future.
  • The Conflict: Upon arrival, the Americans realize they are not alone. The Soviet Union, having discovered traces of “American” settlement in their territory in the present, sent their own expedition (via the TAWAR machine) to protect what they believe is rightfully theirs.
  • The Third Player: A group of Arab mercenaries (The Legion) also enters the fray, tasked by future oil magnates to destroy the Siberite deposits and preserve the global oil monopoly.

Gameplay: RTS with a Human Soul

Original War is defined by scarcity. Unlike other RTS games, you cannot “train” or “produce” more human units; every person in your squad is an irreplaceable individual with a name, face, and persistent stats.

  • Persistent RPG Progression: Characters earn experience (XP) and level up across four classes: Soldier, Engineer, Mechanic, and Scientist. A unit can change their “kit” in seconds at a barracks or lab, but their skill levels remain persistent.
  • Irreplaceable Losses: If a character dies, they are gone for the entire campaign. This forces players to prioritize healing and tactical retreats over suicide charges.
  • Apeman Integration: To supplement your dwindling human workforce, you can research and train prehistoric “Apemen” to perform basic labor or act as expendable biological shock troops.

Resources and Technology

Base building is focused on small, efficient outposts rather than sprawling cities.

  • Crates from the Future: Supply crates are randomly teleported from the future into the past, often appearing with a thunderclap that alerts all nearby factions.
  • Oil vs. Siberite: Early-game vehicles and bases run on oil, but the mid-to-late game shifts toward Siberite-powered engines and weapons, which are vastly more efficient and powerful.
  • Tactical Research: Scientists in labs unlock advanced technologies like remote-controlled vehicles, optoelectronics for crate tracking, and eventually, the devastating Siberite bomb.

Key Features

  • Dual Campaigns — Play through the American campaign (centered on John Macmillan) and the Russian campaign (following Yuri Ivanovich “Burlak” Gorky), each with multiple endings and branching narrative paths.
  • Moral Choices — Decide the fate of rival commanders or even defect from your nation to join the “Alliance,” a group of deserters seeking to end the war for the benefit of all humanity.
  • Tactical “Pause and Command” — Manage micro-intensive battles where vehicle damage is localized and pilots can be sniped out of their cockpits.
  • Advanced AI Support — Research computer-controlled turrets and AI drivers to minimize human risk in high-lethal zones.

Summary

Original War is an “almost-RPG” that captures the tension of being stranded in a prehistoric past with limited resources and the weight of the future on your shoulders. It remains a beloved title for its intense focus on individual unit survival and its complex, three-way time-travel plot.

Current Status:

The game has maintained a dedicated cult following through the Original-War.net community, which has provided unofficial patches (v1.12 and beyond) to keep the game compatible with modern systems. It is widely available on Steam and GOG, often receiving small “legacy” updates to ensure functionality on Windows 11 and 12.
