God of War Laufey
Where to buy
Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio stole the show at the June 2, 2026 State of Play, officially revealing the next chapter in the franchise: God of War Laufey.
Confirming long-standing rumors, this upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive shifts the spotlight entirely away from Kratos to star his late wife, Faye (Laufey the Just), in a standalone action-adventure. The announcement dropped with an impressive 20-minute gameplay reveal that sets up a brand-new, multi-mythological setting.

The Plot: Beyond the Pyre
The game’s lengthy gameplay demonstration opens in a beautifully familiar yet heartbreaking way: echoing the beginning of 2018’s God of War, it shows Kratos and Atreus preparing Faye’s body and lighting her funeral pyre.
However, death is merely the beginning. Faye unexpectedly awakens in a strange, surreal parallel dimension called the Everywhen—the definitive afterlife of the gods. Upon crossing over, she discovers that her death has left her family vulnerable. Ruthless deities from entirely different global mythologies are actively vying for power in this magical realm, putting the precise, prophetic plans she laid out to protect Kratos and Atreus at immediate risk. To safeguard her husband and son’s future on Earth, Faye must launch a preemptive war through the afterlife.
Combat & Gameplay Mechanics
While God of War Laufey retains the intimate, over-the-shoulder perspective and brutal impact of the Norse duology, playing as Faye introduces a radically different, faster combat style:
- High-Velocity Agility: Faye is lighter and significantly more mobile than Kratos. Her gameplay emphasizes rapid precision, dodging, and swift, lethal counters.
- Sword and Magic Matrix: Instead of the Leviathan Axe (which she already passed down to Kratos), Faye fights using an agile sword alongside powerful Frost Giant magic. During the trailer’s climactic battle, she also uncovers a brand-new, heavy cosmic weapon teased to be just as iconic as the Blades of Chaos.
- The Golden Palm Strike: One of Faye’s signature magical abilities allows her to slam her palm into an enemy with such staggering force that it physically detaches their soul from their body template mid-combat, leaving them entirely defenseless.
Eccentric Companions
Faye won’t be navigating the dangers of the Everywhen entirely alone. The State of Play footage introduced a surprisingly lighthearted and bizarre companion dynamic that completely contrasts the stoic tone Kratos usually brings:
- Phranque the Cosmic Cube: Faye teams up with a sentient, talking gelatinous “cosmic cube” named Phranque (voiced by Jack Quaid). Phranque acts as her guide through the lore of the afterlife, assisting with tactical combat positioning and dynamic puzzle-solving.
- The Talking Blade: The gameplay trailer also showcased Faye being aided by a sentient talking sword, adding a unique conversational layer to her journey.
The reveal confirms that Santa Monica Studio is boldly pushing the franchise into uncharted territory, blending cross-mythology cosmic stakes with a highly fluid new combat protagonist.
