Eyes of War is a medieval real-time strategy (RTS) game developed and published by Good Mood Games. Released into its full version on January 31, 2025, after a significant Early Access period, it serves as a modern bridge between the macro-management of Age of Empires and the visceral, ground-level combat of Mount & Blade.

Eyes of War is recognized for successfully navigating the “hybrid genre” challenge. Following a major optimization overhaul in April 2026, the game has moved past its initial performance hurdles, offering a stable and unique experience where players can swap between the role of an all-seeing commander and a frontline soldier with a single keystroke.

The Premise: A Kingdom in the Balance

The game is set in a brutal, grounded medieval world where four distinct nations vie for total dominance. Unlike many RTS titles that lean into high-fantasy elements, Eyes of War keeps its feet firmly in the mud and steel of historical warfare. There is no predetermined “hero of prophecy”; instead, the story is written by the player across the battlefields of the Strategy, Arena, and Battle modes.

Gameplay: Commander and Combatant

The core hook of Eyes of War is the ability to shift perspective instantly, fundamentally changing how you engage with the battlefield:

  • Strategy Mode (Macro): From a classic isometric view, you manage the growth of your empire. You gather wood, stone, and gold to construct a sprawling castle and develop a thriving city. You must manage your resource flow to produce a balanced army, building everything from basic infantry barracks to advanced siege workshops.
  • Character Mode (Micro): At any moment, you can select an individual unit—whether it’s a humble footman, a master archer, or a heavy knight—and hit a hotkey to possess them. The game shifts into a third-person action-RPG. You can swing your sword, raise your shield to block, or aim your bow manually. If your possessed unit dies, you simply “jump” into the next nearest soldier, allowing you to stay in the thick of the fray.
  • Castle Architecture: Base building is more than just placing boxes; you can design complex curtain walls, gatehouses, and towers. Positioning your archers on these walls is vital, though you’ll often find yourself jumping into a soldier manually to ensure the defense holds when the enemy brings up their battering rams.
  • Nation Asymmetry: You choose between four nations, each with a unique visual style and tactical philosophy. Some focus on heavy, slow-moving infantry and impenetrable defenses, while others rely on swift cavalry and hit-and-run skirmishing.

Optimization

As of May 2026, Eyes of War is in its most polished state. The April 2026 Optimization Patch was a turning point for the game, drastically reducing VRAM and RAM requirements and introducing DLSS stability. This allowed the game’s signature large-scale battles—featuring over 500 units—to run smoothly on mid-range hardware.

The community-led competitive scene has also stabilized, with the Arena Mode becoming a popular spot for 1v1 and 2v2 duels where players can prove their mechanical combat skill without the distractions of base management.

Key Features:

  • Seamless Hybrid Gameplay — Transition instantly from a top-down tactical overview to a visceral third-person combat system.
  • Deep Medieval Logistics — Build a functional economy and a fortified city using a classic resource-gathering and construction loop.
  • Four Nations — Master unique tech trees and unit rosters, each offering a different cultural and tactical flavor.
  • Multiple Game Modes — Engage in traditional RTS Skirmishes, dedicated 1v1 Arena Duels, or pure Battle Mode engagements where the focus is solely on army vs. army.
  • Improved 2026 Performance — Optimized for modern systems with a job-based multi-threading system that handles massive unit counts and complex physics without the “jank” of the early versions.

Release Platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows (PC) — Available on Steam (Full Release: January 31, 2025).
  • Linux / SteamOS — Fully supported, with “Playable” status on Steam Deck (minor text scaling adjustments recommended).
  • Consoles — No official release on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S as of May 2026; the developer remains focused on the PC and Steam Deck experience.
