Distant Sun
Where to buy
Distant Sun is a 2024 indie sci-fi role-playing game developed and published by the small studio Koboi Interactive. Released on January 17, 2024, for PC via Steam, it is a low-budget, narrative-heavy adventure that heavily prioritizes player choice, puzzle-solving, and branching dialogue over fast-paced action.
Core Concept and Story
The game is set in the late 2100s, a dystopian future where Earth’s nations are experiencing massive rising tensions and, as the game puts it, “there’s not much space in space.” To ensure humanity’s survival, an organization known as Pioneer Research embarks on a mission to expand human civilization across the cosmos via Pioneer Station.
However, something goes terribly wrong aboard the station. You are dropped into the middle of this crisis and tasked with figuring out exactly what happened. As you sift through the station and interact with the remaining survivors, you slowly uncover a massive, solar-scale conspiracy. The narrative is highly malleable; you can choose to seek peace and diplomacy, or you can violently gun down anyone who stands in your way.
Gameplay and Features
Distant Sun leans heavily into classic RPG mechanics and interactive fiction tropes:
- Branching Dialogue: The core of the game revolves around its extensive dialogue trees. Talking with NPCs, interrogating research personnel, and choosing your words carefully are essential for unraveling the mysteries of Pioneer Station and will directly impact which ending you receive.
- Investigative Puzzle Solving: When you aren’t talking, you are investigating. The game requires you to actively sift through corporate emails, hack into administration systems, and bypass security protocols to uncover hidden lore and progress the story.
- Companions: You do not have to explore the station entirely alone. You are accompanied by two crewmates, Wonglei and Hailey, who provide you with essential advice, narrative exposition, and backup firepower during combat encounters.
- Character Customization: Before diving into the mysteries of the station, the game features an in-depth character creator that allows you to fully customize your protagonist’s appearance to fit your specific roleplay style.
Reception and Scale
As a highly obscure, budget-priced indie game (launching at just $9.99), Distant Sun flew almost entirely under the radar of the mainstream gaming press upon its release.
It currently holds a very tiny footprint on the Steam store, lacking enough user reviews to even generate an aggregate score. The few players who have experienced it generally appreciate its ambitious narrative scope and the emphasis on player agency and dialogue, though it naturally lacks the cinematic polish and graphical fidelity of larger AAA sci-fi RPGs.
Quick Note
Distant Sun is a quiet, narrative-driven sci-fi mystery.
In short: If you prefer high-octane shooting and massive set pieces, this won’t be for you. But if you enjoy slower, text-heavy indie RPGs where you spend your time hacking corporate emails, talking your way out of standoffs, and unraveling a deep space conspiracy, it offers an interesting, choice-driven adventure.
