XgpSaveTools

By brodrigz Version: 1-0-1745731415

XgpSaveTools is a free Windows command-line tool that extracts saves from Xbox Game Pass for PC games and writes edited or converted files back. It is open source under the MIT license, built on .NET 6, and based on Z1ni’s XGP-save-extractor. The latest release (July 12, 2026) is a self-contained single-file build, so you do not need to install a runtime.

Why it exists

Game Pass versions of PC games keep saves in Xbox container formats inside the game’s package folder, so you cannot copy them straight into a Steam or Epic install. XgpSaveTools reads these containers, shows you what is inside, and handles the extraction for you.

What it can do

  • Extract saves: pick a game or a custom wgs folder, choose the user container, and the tool builds a ZIP archive after you confirm the plan.
  • Replace save entries: swap a WGS entry for your own file. The tool creates a full backup before it writes anything.
  • Handle PGS saves: newer games that store saves under XboxGames\GameSave\pgs get a complete backup (active snapshot, metadata, SHA-256 integrity manifest) or a raw export of the game files. PGS imports are not available yet.
  • Convert saves between stores: game-specific handlers cover cases that need more than a file copy. For id Tech titles such as DOOM: The Dark Ages, the tool converts Xbox and Steam saves in both directions, re-signing them with a SteamID64.
  • Roll back safely: multi-file replacements run as one atomic operation with automatic backup and rollback.

Supported games

The built-in list covers 77 games, including Starfield, Fallout 4, Palworld, Oblivion Remastered, Avowed, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Persona 5 Royal, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Forza Horizon 5 and Forza Horizon 6. A game that is not listed can be added through games.json with its package name and a built-in handler.

How to use it

  1. Close the game and run the tool on Windows 10 or 11.
  2. Select the game and the user container.
  3. Choose Extract Files or Replace Entry.
  4. Review the plan and confirm.

Not every container entry is a save slot, so keep the generated backup until the game loads your save without errors.

Why it matters

Switching from Game Pass to Steam or Epic, or keeping a backup of progress outside the Xbox app, normally means losing your saves or digging through unreadable containers. XgpSaveTools turns that into a four-step job with a backup behind every change.
