Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5 is a 2018 open-world first-person shooter developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. Released on March 27, 2018, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, it continues to build on the franchise’s signature sandbox formula using the Dunia engine. This entry makes a bold shift in setting, bringing the explosive chaos stateside to the fictional, picturesque Hope County, Montana, and tackling themes of religious extremism and doomsday preparation.

Core Story

You play as the “Junior Deputy,” a customizable, silent protagonist part of a joint federal and local task force sent to execute an arrest warrant for Joseph Seed, the charismatic and terrifying leader of the Project at Eden’s Gate doomsday cult. The arrest goes disastrously wrong; the helicopter crashes, the task force is captured, and Hope County is completely cut off from the outside world. To save your colleagues and liberate the county, you must systematically dismantle the cult’s grip on the region by taking down Joseph’s “Heralds” (his siblings Jacob, John, and Faith), who each control a massive, distinct territory within the valley.

Gameplay and Features

Far Cry 5 refined the series’ exploration mechanics, streamlining the open world to feel more organic and player-driven:

• No More Radio Towers: In a major departure from the “Ubisoft formula,” players no longer climb towers to unfog the map. Instead, the map is revealed naturally through exploration, reading road signs, finding maps, and talking to rescued civilians who point you toward outposts and missions.
• Guns (and Fangs) for Hire: The companion system is massively expanded. You can recruit specialized human allies (like Grace the sniper or Nick Rye the pilot) and animal companions—including Boomer the dog (who tags enemies), Peaches the stealthy cougar, and Cheeseburger the massive, diabetic grizzly bear.
• Air Combat: For the first time in the series, players can pilot fully armed airplanes and helicopters, engaging in aerial dogfights and strafing cultist convoys from the sky.
• The Resistance Meter: Everything you do—destroying cult shrines, saving hostages, or clearing outposts—builds Resistance Points. Reaching specific thresholds forces a confrontation with the region’s Herald, creating a dynamic progression system that constantly pushes the story forward.
• Full Campaign Co-op: Unlike Far Cry 4, the entire campaign in Far Cry 5 can be played in drop-in/drop-out two-player co-op, allowing for double the chaos in Hope County.
• Far Cry Arcade: A massive, built-in map editor and community hub where players can create and play custom single-player, co-op, and multiplayer levels using assets from across various Ubisoft franchises (including Assassin’s Creed and Watch Dogs).

PC Version

The PC version of Far Cry 5 is incredibly well-optimized, capable of delivering stunning vistas of the Montana wilderness. With support for ultra-wide monitors, uncapped framerates, and high-resolution textures, the detailed forests, rushing rivers, and sprawling farmland look spectacular. The active PC modding community also offers “Resistance Mods” that tweak the game’s balance, adjust weapon FOVs, and most importantly, allow players to alter the controversial “forced kidnapping” story progression mechanic.

Console Versions

The game launched to great success on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, offering a beautiful and stable 30 FPS experience. However, modern console players received a massive gift in 2023 when Ubisoft released a free Next-Gen Patch for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This update bumped the game to a native 60 FPS and improved the resolution, making it the perfect time for console players to revisit (or experience for the first time) the gorgeous mountains of Hope County.
