Progression comes through leveling stats, finding new equipment, and acquiring Ashes of War to customize weapon skills. The game embraces minimal guidance, offering no minimap and sparse waypoint hints; players must chart their course through discovery, courage, and resourcefulness.

Distinctive features include its non-linear structure and emphasis on discovery – players can tackle major objectives in varied order, uncover dozens of optional dungeons, or pursue hidden questlines with branching outcomes. The Lands Between is populated with hundreds of weapons, spells, and craftable items, alongside collectible Spirit Ashes that summon allies in battle.
