The gaming world is reeling from the tragic news of Vince Zampella’s passing on December 22, 2025, following a fatal car accident in Los Angeles. The 55-year-old industry titan, known for co-creating Call of Duty, founding Respawn Entertainment, and leading the Battlefield franchise, leaves behind an indelible legacy that reshaped modern gaming.

Zampella’s career began with Medal of Honor: Allied Assault in 2002, but his defining moment came as co-founder of Infinity Ward, where he spearheaded the creation of Call of Duty. The franchise, particularly Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, revolutionized first-person shooters, becoming a cultural and commercial juggernaut. After a high-profile split with Activision in 2010, Zampella co-founded Respawn Entertainment with Jason West, delivering critically acclaimed titles like Titanfall, Apex Legends, and the Star Wars Jedi series.

In 2021, Zampella took the helm of EA’s Battlefield franchise, steering Battlefield 6 to blockbuster success with over seven million copies sold at launch, revitalizing the series after the lukewarm reception of Battlefield 2042. His leadership extended to Respawn’s ongoing projects, cementing his reputation as a visionary who trusted his teams and championed bold ideas.

The accident, reported by NBC Los Angeles, occurred in the San Gabriel Mountains when Zampella’s 2026 Ferrari 296 GTX crashed into a concrete barrier, resulting in a fire. Zampella and an unnamed passenger were killed, with authorities still investigating the cause.

Tributes have poured in from across the industry. Electronic Arts called his death an “unimaginable loss,” praising his profound influence on gaming. Respawn Entertainment remembered Zampella as a “dear friend” whose daily commitment to creativity and community defined their studio. Infinity Ward honored him as a foundational figure in Call of Duty’s history, while Battlefield’s team hailed his care for players and developers alike. Industry icons like Hideo Kojima, John Romero, and Geoff Keighley shared personal reflections, with Keighley calling him a “visionary executive” who never compromised on integrity.

Fans also paid heartfelt tributes, notably in Titanfall 2, where players organized an in-game gun salute, honoring Zampella as the “original Pilot” of the franchise’s lore.

Zampella is survived by his wife and three children. His contributions to Call of Duty, Titanfall, Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi, and Battlefield will continue to inspire players and developers for generations. As the industry grieves, his legacy as a pioneer of modern shooters and a champion of creative storytelling endures.
