HBO Greenlights ‘Baldur’s Gate’ Sequel Series: Craig Mazin to Continue BG3 Story Post-Finale
Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO is developing a high-profile drama series based on the Baldur’s Gate video game franchise, serving as a direct narrative continuation of Larian Studios’ blockbuster Baldur’s Gate 3. The project, produced in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment (parent of Wizards of the Coast), is being created, written, executive produced, and showrun by Craig Mazin—Emmy winner behind HBO’s Chernobyl and The Last of Us.
Unlike a retelling of the games, the series picks up immediately after Baldur’s Gate 3‘s multiple endings, thrusting new protagonists—starting as relatively powerless adventurers—into the chaotic aftermath. Their paths will intersect with returning characters from the game, including heroes, villains, and even devils, who could aid or obstruct them amid political intrigue and high-stakes D&D lore. BioWare’s classic Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 serve as “unofficial source material” with thematic commonalities, but the show draws primarily from BG3‘s bookends and broader Forgotten Realms mythology, freeing Mazin for an ongoing, serialized format.
Mazin, a lifelong Dungeons & Dragons devotee who’s run weekly campaigns as Dungeon Master for 15 years, poured nearly 1,000 hours into BG3—including a grueling Honor Mode completion. “After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of the Coast created,” he said. “I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”
Executive producers include Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Hasbro’s Gabriel Marano, with former Wizards of the Coast story lead Chris Perkins consulting. Mazin plans to approach BG3‘s voice cast for potential roles, much like his The Last of Us approach.
Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 juggernaut that sold over 15 million copies and swept every major Game of the Year award, has no involvement in the series—confirmed directly to Geoff Keighley, host of The Game Awards. Larian CEO Swen Vincke took a positive stance, noting BG3‘s endings were designed as “narrative soil” for future tales, while publishing director Michael Douse voiced frustration over the lack of consultation.
The project stands apart from Hasbro’s planned Baldur’s Gate 4—confirmed in development but without a studio attached—and Netflix’s separate live-action Forgotten Realms series, executive produced by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy. Larian had mulled a BG3 expansion or full sequel before parting ways with Wizards of the Coast to pursue original IPs like a new Divinity entry.
As HBO eyes another video game triumph following The Last of Us‘ success, Mazin’s passion project could cement Baldur’s Gate as TV’s next fantasy powerhouse—provided it honors the game’s player-driven legacy. No premiere date has been set.
